GST (Goods and Services Tax), VAT (Value Added Tax), and sales tax are all forms of consumption tax applied to goods and services. While the names differ by country, the calculation method is the same.
United States: Federal sales tax does not exist — states set their own rates. Range from 0% (Montana, Oregon) to 9.55% (Tennessee). Average combined state/local rate is ~7.12%.
United Kingdom: Standard VAT rate is 20%. Reduced rate of 5% for domestic fuel, children's car seats. 0% for food, books, children's clothing.
European Union: Standard VAT rates range from 17% (Luxembourg) to 27% (Hungary). Most countries are 19–25%.
India: GST has four slabs — 5% (essential goods), 12% (standard goods), 18% (most services), 28% (luxury items). Some items are exempt (0%).
Australia: 10% GST applies to most goods and services. Fresh food, education, healthcare and childcare are GST-free.
Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Value Added Tax (VAT) are consumption taxes applied at each stage of production and supply. Whether you are a business calculating prices, a consumer checking a receipt, or an accountant reconciling tax — this calculator handles all common tax calculations instantly with support for 15 major currencies.
When a product is priced excluding GST, add the tax to find the customer's final price. Formula: Final Price = Original × (1 + Rate/100). Example: A product priced at $100 excluding 10% GST → Final = 100 × 1.10 = $110. The GST amount is $10. Use the "Add Tax" mode in this calculator for instant results.
When a price is already GST-inclusive and you need the original pre-tax amount, use reverse GST. Formula: Original = Total ÷ (1 + Rate/100). Example: An item costs $110 including 10% GST → Original = 110 ÷ 1.10 = $100. GST amount = $10. Use the "Remove Tax" mode. This is also called "backing out the GST" or extracting the tax from a gross amount.
India: Four slabs — 5% (essentials), 12% (standard), 18% (most services and goods), 28% (luxury). Zero-rated: fresh food, healthcare, education. Australia: 10% flat rate. Zero-rated: fresh food, medical supplies, financial services. UK VAT: Standard 20%, reduced 5% (domestic energy), zero for food and children's clothing. Canada: 5% federal GST plus provincial taxes (total 5–15%). New Zealand: 15% GST. Singapore: 9% GST (from 2024). UAE/Saudi Arabia: 5% VAT.
US sales tax is not a GST or VAT — it is collected only at the final point of sale, not at each production stage. It varies dramatically by location: Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware and Alaska have no sales tax. Tennessee and Louisiana have the highest combined rates at over 9.5%. Prices in the US are usually displayed excluding sales tax — use the Add Tax mode with your local rate to find the final price.
